Frequently Asked Questions

PHYLOSOPHY

Question 1: What does Darwin mean by a “whole child” philosophy of education?

Darwin’s Whole Child Philosophy is based on the conviction that a child is not a single skill or score to be optimized, but a whole human being to be formed. It recognizes that education must take responsibility not only for academic learning, but also for the child’s emotional, social, physical, moral, and creative development—because these areas grow together and affect one another.

Question 2: What areas of development are included in Darwin’s definition of the whole child?

Darwin understands the child as developing across interconnected domains: intellectual, emotional, social, physical, moral, and creative. These areas do not develop in isolation—weakness in one affects the others, and strength in one can support growth elsewhere. Education that ignores this interconnectedness becomes fragmented and incomplete.

Question 3: How does Darwin apply the whole child philosophy in daily school life?

Darwin’s whole child approach is intentional and structured. Academics develop reasoning and judgment, sports build discipline and resilience, clubs and the arts support identity and confidence, service develops empathy and responsibility, and technology and A.I. are integrated with values and discipline. Each area has a role, and none is treated as optional or as a replacement for another.

METHOD

Question 1: What is the International Progressivist Method of Education used by Darwin?

The International Progressivist Method of Education is Darwin’s response to the reality that students are growing up in a global, complex, fast-changing, and uncertain world. It moves education away from mere information transfer and toward the formation of thinking, judgment, character, and adaptability. Knowledge remains important, but it is treated as a tool—not the final goal.

Question 2: What does “international” mean in Darwin’s International Progressivist Method?

“International” does not mean copying foreign systems blindly. It means being aware of global realities, cultures, and perspectives, and preparing students to think beyond local assumptions while remaining grounded in local identity and values. Students learn to place ideas within broader historical, cultural, ethical, and global contexts.

Question 3: What does “international” mean in Darwin International School’s name?

“International” at Darwin refers to educational orientation, perspective, and standards, not nationality, ownership, or legal status. It means preparing Filipino students to think beyond local assumptions, engage with global ideas, and meet intellectually demanding standards—while remaining rooted in Philippine identity

CURRICULUM

Question 1: Is Darwin a Philippine school or a foreign school?

Darwin is a Philippine school.

All campuses and programs are recognized by the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines. While Darwin has an international outlook and offers enhanced programs, it remains firmly grounded in Philippine education, culture, laws, and national identity

Question 2: Is Darwin implementing the MATATAG Curriculum?

Yes. Darwin is implementing the MATATAG Curriculum in accordance with Department of Education policies and timelines.

Implementation began with selected grade levels and continues through the phased rollout. Required MATATAG competencies are integrated while maintaining academic rigor, mastery standards, and Darwin’s established learning framework.

Question 3: Is Darwin an English-speaking school?

Yes. Darwin is an English-speaking school.

English is used as the medium of instruction in all subjects mandated by the Department of Education to be taught in English, such as English, Mathematics, Science, MAPEH, and TLE or EPP. This helps students develop strong academic English skills and confidence in communication

Question 4: If Darwin is an English-speaking school, does that mean Filipino is not prioritized?

No. Filipino is highly valued and actively taught at Darwin.

Subjects mandated by the Department of Education to be taught in Filipino, such as Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, are taught using Filipino. The school believes that strong grounding in the national language strengthens identity, thinking, and communication rather than weakening English proficiency.

Question 5: Does Darwin teach beyond the standard curriculum?

Darwin deliberately goes beyond the minimum national curriculum through a coordinated package of academic enhancements designed to deepen learning and prepare students for higher demands.

These include enrichment and advanced subjects such as:

• Humanities from Toddler to Senior High School

• Japanese as an enrichment subject from Grade 1 to Junior High School

• Coding from Kindergarten to Grade 12

• Though not required by DepEd in Toddler to Grade 2, Science is taught at Darwin from Toddler to Grade 2 to develop early scientific thinking

• Philippine History is retained even where it has been removed from the standard Grade 7 curriculum, to strengthen national identity

• Mathematics is taught in advance at all levels to build strong analytical and problem-solving skills

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVIES

Additional clubs may be offered in campuses with larger student populations or higher grade levels, such as:
